Install
Hierarchy Totals is a Forge app for Jira Cloud. Once it is live on the Atlassian Marketplace, install it from the listing (the button will appear here). Until then, this page documents the flow you will see.
- A Jira admin installs the app from the Marketplace.
- Open any dashboard → Add gadget → search for Hierarchy Totals.
- The first time each person views the gadget, Jira asks them to Allow access — a one-time, read-only grant that lets the app enforce that viewer’s own project permissions. See the FAQ for why.
Configure your first rollup
Open the gadget’s settings (⋯ menu → Configure on the tile) and pick:
- Projects — up to ten. With two or more, each project gets its own summary row.
- Field — any numeric field: Story Points, estimates, business value.
- Aggregate — sum, average, median, min, max, or count.
- Open work only — exclude Done issues so totals mean remaining work.
- Expand all levels by default — start with the whole tree open.
Save. The first render shows a live preview while the background engine takes its first full snapshot (a few minutes even for tens of thousands of issues); after that, every render is instant.
Reading the gadget
- The header shows what you configured:
median · Story Points · open only. - Bold rows are projects; expand them for epics and their subtrees.
- The
Σcolumn is the aggregate for that row’s entire subtree. N unest.counts unestimated issues in the subtree — click it to see them.- The footer shows exactly how fresh the data is and honest diagnostics (issues outside the hierarchy, broken parent links).
